Coral:

  • reefs are major geological structures built by plants and animals;
  • feeds by catching microscopic floating animals with their tentacles;
  • spawn at night, just after a full moon, in late spring or early summer;
  • that is soft is toxic, distasteful to fish or are protected by tiny limestone thorns.

Pollution - including oil spills, chemicals, sewage, soil washing into water, rubbish (eg. plastic bags, fishing lines and nets), may kill animals or their food supply.

Climate change - could alter weather patterns including temperatures and precipitation. The sea level may rise.
