Mallee fowls:

  • use up to 3 tonnes of soil and plants to build nesting mounds;
  • check the temperature of their mounds with their tongue;
  • add or remove vegetation to keep the mounds at 33°C; and
  • do not need any parental care once they hatch from the egg.

Fire - frequency, intensity and seasonality changes may alter the vegetation composition and reduce or destroy shelter availability

Rabbits - compete with native animals for food and shelter, ring bark plants and can change the vegetation composition, disturb the soil and cause erosion
